PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To freely combine and use fonts of different font makers by making it easy to detect letter information of a font such as an effective part setting position of an effective part position changeable character and the character width of a character width variable character. SOLUTION: A letter characteristic information extracting means 12 expands font data of a font file 10 into dot image data and uses a discrimination mask to detects the set position of an effective part of the effective part position changeable character like symbols.
