Compounds of the general formula (1), prodrugs thereof, or pharmaceutically acceptable salts of both exhibit poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibiting activity and are useful as remedies for diseases due to enhanced PARP activity, e.g., ischemic brain diseases: wherein X<1>-X<2>- is C(=O)-N(R<7>)- or C(R<8>)=N- (wherein R<7> is hydrogen, optionally substituted alkyl, or the like and R<8> is optionally substituted alkyl or the like); R<1>, R<2>, R<3> and R<4> are each independently hydrogen, optionally substituted alkyl, or the like; R<5> is either nil or one or more substituents on piperazine ring which may be the same or different from each other and are each optionally substituted alkyl or the like; and R<6> is hydrogen, optionally substituted alkyl, or the like.
