PURPOSE: A method for protecting compressors used in chillers and/or heat pumps is provided to ensure the compressor to operate within the compressor map, while guaranteeing the compressor's lifespan and reliability. CONSTITUTION: A method comprises a step(110) of measuring SST(saturate suction temperature)every 15 seconds; a step(120) of comparing SST to a given temperature(X); a step(125) of unloading one compressor, if the SST is less than or equal to X; a step(140) of checking if the SST is greater than limit1 by a certain amount(Y); a step(142) of checking coil frosting is greater than 75 percent; a step(144) of defrosting the coil, if coil frosting is greater than 75 percent; a step(146) of unloading one compressor; a step(150) of checking if the SST is still greater than limit1; a step(152) of checking the rate of change of the SDT to see if it is greater than a specified amount; a step(154) of checking the degree of coil frosting; a step(156) of unloading one compressor, if the degree of coil frosting is not greater than 75 percent; a step(158) of defrosting the coil frosting, if the degree of coil frosting is greater than 75 percent; a step(160) of checking SDT(saturated discharge temperature) is greater than limit2 minus a safety margin(Z), if the compressor is less than limit1; a step(162) of preventing compressor loading, if SDT is greater than limit 2 minus a safety margin; and a step(170) of permitting compressor loading if necessary.
