A magnetic filter 10 is arranged in series with a radial flow porous filter 20 for use with an ic engine lubrication system. The magnetic filter has permanent magnets 30 surrounded by a plurality of raised elements 59 eg axially deformed flat wire compression washers forming a field intensifier matrix in the form of a honeycomb structure. The magnetic assembly is removable for mechanical cleaning. The porous filter comprises a cardboard tube 27 and cellulose fibre sheeting 28 supported by a carbon steel compression spring 42.
