<p>A method and apparatus for removing excess material 22 from a golf ball 20 comprises rotating a golf ball which has excess material extending from its surface about an imaginary axis 30, directing a laser beam 38 at the excess material and burning the excess material from the ball as it is rotated. Optionally the beam may be directed perpendicularly or parallel to the imaginary axis. Preferably the laser has a frequency of 500Hz and the length of the beam may be adjusted to follow the contour of the surface of the ball (including the dimples). The laser can be used to burn a plurality of dimples into the parting line of the ball and the excess material may be non-planar. A method for imparting a dimple pattern on a smooth surface of a golf ball is also described.</p> |
