PURPOSE: A vehicle self-diagnostic system and a method using a mobile terminal is provided so that a user can execute self-diagnosis for his vehicle using his mobile terminal and can receive relevant repair information. CONSTITUTION: A vehicle self-diagnostic system consists of a mobile terminal(10), a data conversion system(20), a vehicle control/self-diagnosis unit(30), and an information service center(40). The mobile terminal(10) accesses the information service center(40), downloads basic information for the diagnosis of malfunctions in new vehicle types and modified diagnostic information, and upgrades a database. The mobile terminal(10) is comprised of a transceiver(11), a data updating part(12), a database(13), a vehicle diagnosis part(14), an interface part(15), and a main processor(16). The data conversion system(20), installed in a vehicle or in the mobile terminal as a special module, covers a function to stably maintain the data transmission and reception between the vehicle control/self-diagnosis unit(30) and the mobile terminal(10), as connected between them. The data conversion system(20) is comprised of a main processor(21), the first interface part(22), a packet processing part(23), and the second interface part(24). The vehicle control/self-diagnosis unit(30) executes self-diagnosis for vehicle status information detected during the operation of a vehicle, and stores it in a preset database. The information service center(40), a service provider who provides basic information for the malfunction diagnosis of vehicles, is composed of a transceiver(41), a user authentication part(42), a data retrieval part(43), a database(44), and a main processor.
