Mixtures of cresols and xylenols are separated into their individual components by alkylating the mixture with isobutene in the presence of 0.1 to 1.0% by weight of 70% perchloric acid based on the amount of the phenols to be alkylated, neutralising perchloric acid in the reaction mixture and separating the resulting perchloric acid salt therefrom, fractionally distilling the reaction product separated from perchloric acid and converting by dealkylation the butylated phenols in the individual fractions into the corresponding phenols. The invention is described by reference to the separation mixtures of m- and p-cresols and 2,4- and 2,5-xylenols. The alkylation reaction, which may be carried out at 10 DEG to 60 DEG C., yields dibutylated products in the case of cresol mixtures and monobutylated products in the case of xylenol mixtures. Neutralisation of perchloric acid is preferably effected using gaseous ammonia but an aqueous solution of ammonia can be used. Specification 484,151 is referred to.
