PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate automatic discrimination among the types of fitted tools. SOLUTION: A tool collating and discriminating device mounted on the bed of a machining center is composed of a tool collating means 5 fitted with planar and taper-surface-like abutting surfaces whereon the tip of the tool abuts, a stroke quantity measuring means 15 for measuring the stroke quantity of a tool fitting part, and a computing means 25 whereto the means 5, 15 are connected. The tool fitting part is moved until the tip of the tool abuts on the planar abutting surface for the purpose of measuring the actually measured value of the first stroke quantity of the tool fitting part. After that, the tool fitting part is moved until the tip of the tool abuts on the taper-surface-like abutting surface for the purpose of measuring the actually measured value of the second stroke quantity thereof. The actually measured values of the effective length of the tool and the height of the tip-arrival point of the tool are computed by the means 25 according to the actually measured values of the first and second stroke quantities, and collated with theoretical values in order that it is may be determined whether the fitted tool is right or wrong.
