PURPOSE: An extension number announcement system using a telephone and a method thereof are provided to enable even an old and feeble person or an orally handicapped person to easily select an extension number by providing an announcement message in voice or character. CONSTITUTION: If a telephone is off the hook by a user and a telephone number is input, a DTMF signal(or a tone signal) is generated and output to a private branch exchange(S10). The telephone outputs a ring back tone signal to the user(S12). If the private branch exchange detects the DTMF signal received from the telephone(S40), the private branch exchange draws out voice and character announcement data from voice and character announcement memories(S42). The private branch exchange transmits the drawn voice and character announcement data to the telephone(S44). The telephone separates voice and character announcement messages(S14), outputs the voice announcement message to a speaker(S16), and stores the character announcement message at a memory(S18). The telephone divides the character announcement message to be appropriated for the size of a LCD and outputs the divided character announcement message to the LCD(S20). If the user inputs a specific extension number, the telephone transmits the DTMF signal of the corresponding extension number(S22). The private branch exchanger received the corresponding extension number sets up a call path with an extension telephone having the corresponding extension number(S46).
