The procedure for treating, and especially sterilising the inner surface (45) of a cavity, is new. The procedure for treating, and especially sterilising the inner surface (45) of a cavity, e.g. a container, uses a plasma torch with its distal end (4) projecting into the cavity and delivering a plasma pulse (4) which sweeps the whole inner surface of the cavity. During operation the outlet from the cavity is restricted by a gravity valve (47) over its outlet (42) which slides along the torch and opens at a predetermined pressure level. The pulsed plasma jet is produced inside the torch by an arc between two main electrodes (9, 11) connected to the terminals of a pre-charged condenser.
