PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect fault in a linear variable and differential transformer(LVDT) and a revolving variable and differential transformer(RVDT). SOLUTION: A method and a device for detecting the fault of the RVDT and the LVDT are described. The sum of secondary voltages V1 and V2 from converters is obtained by adding the secondary voltages, i.e., V1+V2. The sum of the secondary voltages is theoretically constant for the whole positions of the LVDT and RVDT since the whole length of a second-order transformer is fixed. When electric fault exits in a primary or secondary winding wire (10), a change occurs, which corresponds to the sum of the secondary voltages. The changed value is compared with a reference value which expresses a no fault state so that an error value is obtained, which indicates the magnitude of the change in the sum of the secondary side values. Certain measures are taken in accordance with the magnitude of the error value.
