Production of aromatic hydroxy carboxylic acid esters (I). Production of aromatic hydroxy carboxylic acid esters of formula (I) comprises: (a) reacting an aromatic hydroxy carboxylic acid of formula (II) with a 3-chloro- or 3-bromopropionyl halide in an aqueous medium in the presence of a water-soluble base to form a base salt of (I); and (b) treating the base salt with an acid. (HO)n-Ar-X-COOH (II) --> (R1>COO)n-Ar-X-COOH (I) R1>2-chloroethyl, 2-bromoethyl or vinyl; n : 1-3; Ar : optionally substituted arylene or heteroarylene; X : a direct bond or vinylene. An independent claim is also included for compounds (I) where R1> is 2-chloroethyl or 2-bromoethyl.
