Column arrangement comprises a vessel with the eluent (1) connected to an automatic sampler (4) via an HPLC pump (2); a fractionating pump (3); two fractionating columns (5, 6), a main separating column (7) connected to a conductivity detector (8), a waste vessel (9) and switching valves (A, B). The valve (A) is connected to the fractionating column (5) or column (6) and both columns are connected to the sampler or fractionating pump. The fractionating columns are connected via the valve (B) to the main column or to the waste vessel. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the chromatographic determination of sodium, potassium and ammonium ions. Preferred Features: The sampler is connected via valve (A) to the fractionating column and via valve (B) to the main column.
