A roller bearing 1, Fig. 1 (not shown), having rollers 1b and sealing means 2 therefor, is protected and retained in an assembled state during handling by a temporary mounting comprising a sleeve 3 which has a radial flange 3a abutted by an outer race 1c of the bearing 1 and has radial projections 3b, Fig. 2 (not shown), abutted by a reinforcement 2b, Fig. 1 (not shown), of the sealing means 2. The bearing is mounted into a bore B by means of an axial force applied to a mandrel 6, which has an end 4 of reduced diameter inserted into the bearing and a shoulder 7 abutting a radial extension 1d of the race 1c. Thus the projections 3b are deformed so as to allow the bearing to be released from the sleeve 3. In modifications, the radial projections 3b are replaced by tabs 3d, Fig. 4 (not shown), and an outwardlydirected radial flange 3c is provided. In another embodiment, a roller bearing has a cage 1c which retains rollers 3b in an inward direction, the rollers, having no outer race, being retained in an outward direction by a sleeve 3. The bearing is mounted into the bore B by means of the mandrel 6 which is urged axially against the reinforcement 2b of the sealing means 2. The temporary mounting may also be used for a ball bearing. |
