The present invention relates to the identification and use of sequence elements present in the intergenic region of Cysteine Proteinase Genes, <i>cpb</i>, in <i>L. mexicana</i> and the observation that the identified sequences are involved in the control of stage-regulated gene expression. Principal uses include the preparation of vaccines.
