The present invention describes a process for the purification and crystalli sation of Iopamidol, wherein 1-propanol, or 2-propanol, is added to an aqueous solutio n ofIopamidol followed, if necessary, by azeotropic dist illation to reduce the quantity of water in relation to the quantity of propanol, and thereby ensure an high yi eld. The aqueous solution can be prepared either by the dissolution of crude Iopamido l inwater or directly from the reaction in which the Iop amidol is formed. The present invention presents advantages for the routine production of Iopa midol since the crystallisation is straightforward to perform, can be easily contr olled and is reproducible at an industrial scale.
