A device such as a tool 25, Fig. 9, or a workpiece 27 is detachably secured in a predeter. mined position on a machine by a pair of brackets 1, 9 with complementary registering surfaces 6, 13 of prismatic form. In an electroerosion machine the bracket 1 with four radial projections 6 is fixed to the tool carrying spindle F. Bracket 9 with complementary radial grooves 13 has mounted thereon a hollow split electrode tool used to machine a workpiece 27 detachably secured to the machine bed 30 by a pair of similar brackets 28, 29. Several electrode tools may be used successively on the same workpiece which may itself be used subsequently as an electrode tool for an erosion process. The two brackets 1, 9 are assembled together by a spindle 18, Fig. 6 (not shown), journalled in guide bores 16 of the bracket 9 and having an eccentric portion 20 engaging the bore 8 of a tie rod 4 secured by pin 70 to the bracket 1. A setting jig 33, Fig. 14 (not shown), is used during assembling of the brackets 1, 29 on the machine. The invention enables a workpiece to be eroded in stages, Figs. 2-5 (not shown) using successive erosion tools each clamped to its individual bracket 9. In the manufacture of an erosion electrode, Fig. 10 (not shown), a workpiece 31 is located by brackets 1, 9 whilst being machined in a planing machine. The resulting tool and its bracket are then assembled on the spindle of an electroerosion machine. Fig. 11 (not shown).
