PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time from a read operation start instruction, until the end of reading. SOLUTION: Immediately after at least one original is moved between a transparent plate provided between a read optical system and the original, and an original guide plate that is placed at a position, having the original between itself and the transparent plate and has a prescribed lightness toward the transparent plate ('YES' in S104), the read optical system reads the original guide plate via the transparent plate (S105). Read data by the original guide plate are compared with a discrimination level Jdf for each pixel (S107), so as to detect that an opaque material is attached to the transparent plate (S108).
