Electrophotographic elements and method for their preparation.

Electrophotographic elements which comprise a photoconductive layer on conducting support, wherein the photoconductive layer contains a electrically insulating binder, a dye and, optionally, and organic photoconductor. The dye is in a "dye-dye interaction" condition which results from contacting the layer with vapors of a solvent for the dye after the layer has been formed. Enhanced photoconductive sensitivity and resolution result from the transformation of the dye into the "dye-dye interaction" condition. Dyes found useful in the formation have the structure <CHEM> wherein Z and Z min independently represent O, Se, or S and X<(-)> represents an anion. The difference between the absorption spectra of the pyrylium salts before and after vapor treatment proves the existance of a "dye-dye-interaction" condition (curve 2) different from the "dye-polymer-interaction" condition (curve 1) of the prior art.
