PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a field-emission cold-cathode element that can prevent expansion of electronic beams without reducing the field-emission efficiency of electron beams emitted from a field-emission cold cathode. SOLUTION: This field-emission cold-cathode element comprises an electro- conductive substrate, an electrode formed on the substrate and having a pointed top, an insulation layer formed on the substrate excluding the electrode- formation portion constituting the electrode, and a gate electrode laminated on the insulation layer and having an opening surrounding the above-mentioned electrode. In the opening of the gate electrode, the opening diameter around the top part of the above-mentioned electrode is made larger than the base surface of the above-mentioned electrode.
