PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device that can commonly control lighting of discharge lamps of different kinds with the same lighting device. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device is provided with a power conversion part P for converting an alternate current voltage into direct current voltage by a switching of a switching element connected to an alternator Vs, an inversion circuit J for getting a lighting power for a discharge lamp LA by inputting a direct current output of the power conversion part P, a lamp voltage determining circuit K1 for determining the kind of a discharge lamp LA connected with the inversion circuit J, and a control circuit N for controlling lighting power by controlling the switching operation of the switching element of the power conversion part P at a predetermined switching operation according to the determination result by the lamp voltage determination circuit K1 and the light control signals inputted from outside. The kinds of discharge lamps LA connected by the lamp voltage determination circuit K1 is determined, and the power conversion part P supplies direct current output to the inversion circuit J according to the determination result and light control signals from outside.
