PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of reading a fingerprint image by minimized and simple structure. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with a casing 1, an input member 2 with an input surface, a rotating body 3 consisting of a transparent base material, a light source 4, a light detecting means 5 with plural photoelectric conversion elements and a signal processing means 8, and composites an entire image of fingerprints from partial images by a signal processing means 8 by continuously detecting partial images obtainable from reflected light of troughs of a finger 6 brought into contact with an input surface made incident on the input surface from the light source and a gradation pattern provided on the surface of one end of the rotating body to be rotated by being simultaneously bought into contact with the finger by the light detecting means. Furthermore, a flat image such as a document with gradation becomes readable by arranging the light source and the light detecting means so as to detect scattered light in addition to the reflected light obtainable from the input surface.
