Lipids (in particular, gamma -linolenic acid and cis-6,9,12,15-octadecatetraenoic acid) are produced by culturing a transformant of a microorganism, which has been transformed by a gene encoding a fatty acid desaturase and is capable of secreting lipids out of cells, in a liquid medium and thus accumulating lipids in the medium.
