The variably controlled inlet and outlet valves and the injection system are actuated by a control and regulating device (1). The charge combustion or conversion start and duration values (x) or the main combustion center during any one cycle act as regulating values (y) to produce a defined air-to-fuel ratio ( lambda ) as well as defined effective compression and defined injection pressure together with start and injected volume. These in turn determine the start and duration of the combustion and/or conversion of the charge or the main combustion center during the cycle. The (x) values also act as regulating values (y) for exhaust gas retention volume in the combustion chamber or chamber return.
