The invention relates to a method and device for transferring patients (16) from a first bearing surface (12, 22) to a second bearing surface (22, 12) by means of a displaceable transfer cloth (14). According to the invention, the patient (16) is laid onto the transfer cloth on the first bearing surface (12), the second bearing surface (22) is placed next to the first bearing surface (12) such that it is at least approximately level therewith, and a transfer mechanism (26, 32) is used to draw the transfer cloth (14) over the second bearing surface (22) until the patient (16) is lying thereon.
