A safety syringe having a sheath slidable on the barrel of a syringe from a retracted position where the needle extends through an aperture in the end of the sheath, to an extended position in which the sheath covers the needle. Means are provided to extend the sheath, and preferably this in an automatic action on completion of the inward stroke of the plunger of the syringe.
