PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To straighten the posture of a carton being transferred. SOLUTION: In this cartoning machine, forward and rear side surfaces of a body 1a of a carton 1 are held by a forward finger 3a mounted on a chain 4a and a rear finger 3b mounted on a chain 4b. The cartoning machine is guided and traveled by upper and lower guide rails 11, 12 via the separately driven chains 4a, 4b while holding the body 1a of the carton 1. In the cartoning machine, a belt device 5 to provide the braking force to the traveling action of the carton 1 is installed close to a traveling track of the carton 1. The belt device 5 comprises pulleys 6a-6e and a belt 7 with locking claws 8a-8c mounted on an outer surface thereof at equal intervals, and turnably wound around the pulleys. A shaft brake 9 to provide the predetermined braking force to the pulley 6c is fitted to a shaft 6f of the pulley 6c.
