PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic optical recording medium having a high ratio (D/μ) of diffusion coefficient D to mobility μ and capable of recording without applying an electric field from the outside. SOLUTION: The organic optical recording medium has electric charge generating ability, electric charge transferring ability and ability to vary an optical characteristic by an electric field and comprises a film containing organic molecules having at least one of the abilities. Electric charges of opposite signs are spatially separated by irradiation with electromagnetic waves without applying an electric field form the outside and a light irradiated pattern is recorded by varying the optical characteristic by an internal electric field generated by the electric charges. The average intermolecular distance of organic molecules having electric charge transferring ability is regulated within a specified range.
