PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that enormous equipment and energy and expensive starting raw materials have been needed for obtaining a boron-chromium- tungsten series intermetallic compound. SOLUTION: The powders of tungsten oxide, boron oxide, chromium oxide and metallic aluminum are mixed to form a compression-molded body, fire is set to one end of the compression-molded body in a sealed vessel to induce reaction among the powders, the reaction makes combustion waves, and self- propagation is allowed to occur to synthesize an ingot essentially consisting of the above ternary compound, and in which the average Vickers hardness Hv reaches 2,800 in a short time, and slag deposited in a shell form on the surface of the ingot is separated away, and thereafter, the ingot is pulverized and classified to obtain the B-Cr-W series intermetallic compound. A large quantity of abrasive grains can most efficiently be obtained with reduced energy consumption in a shortest time with extraordinarily inexpensive equipment driven.
