When introducing thermocouples or like devices into a pressurised reaction chamber 4, the escape of hot, and possibly poisonous, reaction gas is avoided by providing a flap 14 which normally seals the inner end of a passage 7 and may be removed laterally to open the passage. The thermocouple is thus introduced until it forms a gas seal with packing 10, whereupon a nut 19 is unscrewed on its shaft 12 to allow a plug 18 to be released. The shaft 12 is then pushed into free space 24, to free flap 14 from its gasket 15, and rotated so that flap 14 is moved laterally away from passage 7 and the thermocouple may be inserted further into the chamber 4. The packing 10, which is initially somewhat loosened, is pressed by gland 9 to give complete gas-tightness whilst measurements are made. A stop 25 ensures that on rotating shaft 12 back again, the flap 14 is centred on gasket 15. |
