The use of moxonidine or a physiologically compatible acid addition salt thereof for the treatment and/or inhibition of functional gastrointestinal disturbances or illnesses in the region of the lower intestinal tracts, particularly for the treatment and/or inhibition of abdominal visceral pain which accompanies them, and the preparation of pharmaceutical compositions suitable for this treatment are is described.
