PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the moving resistance of a vacuum cleaner from being increased by an agitator in the case of the disuse of the agitator, a floor surface from being damaged, and a suction path between an inlet port and the floor surface from being narrowed in the vacuum cleaner having the agitator mounted on the inlet port. SOLUTION: The vacuum cleaner is provided with a mechanism for selectively holding the agitator in a floor surface contacting position and a floor surface non-contacting position. The agitator is held in the floor surface contacting position for the purpose of being rotated in the place such as the carpeted floor surface, where dust has to be raked out by the agitator, and held in the floor surface non-contacting position in the case of the floor surface utilizing a flooring material or a tatami mat. Accordingly, the vacuum cleaner is lightly moved because the agitator does not contact the floor surface. In addition, the unused agitator can be located away from the floor surface for the suction path between the inlet port and the floor surface to be narrowed, and the velocity of a suction flow is increased for the dust to be efficiently sucked in.
