PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating method capable of easily coating a long and heavy rod like member such as a step guardrail member and a coating tool provided with the coating method. SOLUTION: The rod like member is arranged along the longitudinal direction, the coating tool is constituted of a main body provided with a coating material reserving part for injecting a coating liquid, a coating rotationally movable cap part fastened with a screw to one side surface of the main body and having a sponge attached to the inside to apply the coating liquid, a rod like member moving part, which is arranged to face both ends of the main body in the longitudinal direction, in one side of which a lever for lifting up the rod like member from the liquid surface of the liquid coating material injected in a liquid material reserving part is provided and another side of which is connected to a rod like member rotating part to be attached by a U-shaped seat from the bottom part of the main body, and the rod like member rotating part connected to the rod like member moving part and provided with a grip for rotating the rod like member. The rod like member is coated by using the coating tool, dipping a part of the rod like member along the longitudinal direction into a coating liquid, moving the rod like member to a position at least apart from the coating liquid surface and applying the coating liquid stuck to the part along the longitudinal direction of the rod like member in the position at least apart from the coating liquid surface while rotating the rod like member.
