PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique, capable of suppressing vibration deterioration in an internal combustion engine provided with a variable valve system and prevent lowering of drivability, when the need, for cutting off the operation of a cylinder is generated, due to abnormality of an intake/exhaust valve in the internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: This internal combustion engine, having the variable valve system, is characterized by making a combustion interval of the internal combustion engine as a substantially constant interval by cutting off also the operation of a prescribed cylinder, in addition to a cylinder provided with the intake valve or the exhaust valve, when abnormality of the intake valve or the exhaust valve is detected or predicted.
