PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely inform a photographer of the residual state of a memory card by providing an arithmetic circuit to an electronic camera which compresses and stores an image signal on the memory card and calculating the number of unexposed frames with higher certainty. SOLUTION: To detect the number of unexposed frames with higher certainty, this camera is equipped with a detecting means which detects the storable capacity of a storage medium, a specific quantity setting means which sets a specific quantity for unexposed-frame-number calculation according to compressibility, a range setting means which sets a range for compensating variance in the signal quantity of a variable-length compressed image signal according to the specific quantity, and an arithmetic means which calculates the number of unexposed frames according to the storable capacity detected by the detecting means, the specific quantity set by the specific quantity setting means, and the range set by the range setting means.
