PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active matrix type liquid crystal element wherein all pixel batch writing suitable for color display is attained by a field sequential system, and a chiral smectic liquid crystal is driven with low power consumption. SOLUTION: An information signal written to 1st holding capacitance via a 1st switching means 1 is written to 2nd holding capacitance 5 via a 1st source follower circuit 3 and a 2nd switching means 4 by switching on the 2nd switching means 4 for all the pixels in batch, and is further written to pixel capacitance 7 via a source follower circuit 6.
