PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image display device that can display easy to see information for a viewer without a change in scenes in the dark on an entire screen at every addition/rewrite of characters/conversion, and to obtain a display method and a writing method. SOLUTION: The information display device uses a liquid crystal set to a cholesteric phase, the liquid crystal is brought into a transparent state to display a background and into a selective reflecting state to display information. For example, in the display device where three liquid crystal display layers selectively reflecting R, G, B lights are layered, each display layer is reset to a focal conic state to display a background in black, prescribed pixels of each display layer are set to a planar state to display a character 'A' in white. Then in the case of adding a character 'B', the prescribed pixels of each display layer are newly set to the planar state to display characters 'AB' in white.
