PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR TREATING SEWAGE OR LIKE SLUDGE

There is disclosed a process for treating sewage or similar organic sludge t o produce a pasteurised and dried product comprising the steps of: dividing th e sludge into at least one first portion and at least one second portion; dryi ng the first portion so that the first portion has a higher dry solids content than that of the second portion; mixing the first portion and the second portion to produce a mixture having a dry solids content which is intermedia te between that of the first and second portions; adding an alkaline admixture to the mixture in order to pasteurise the mixture and thereby produce the produ ct without employing subsequent drying by aeration.
