In a canned electric motor 11 for pumping liquids at between 450‹ F. and 700‹ F. and comprising a motor housing 14 having opposing end members 16, 17 rotatably mounting a rotor 23 disposed within the housing and encircled by a stator 25 mounted within the housing with a cylindrical can 38 carried by the housing and disposed between the rotor and stator to provide hydraulically separated rotor and stator chambers 39, 40, heat transfer between the two chambers is retarded by a stationary low thermal conductivity solid layer 50 fixed between the rotor and stator adjacent the can and extending at least the axial length of the rotor and stator. The layer may be of asbestos or of ceramic materials Al 2 O 3 or Cr 2 O 3 , part or all of the housing and stator winding end turn encapsulating 56 may be of higher thermal conductivitythan the layer, the housing may have heat dissipating fins, not shown, and thermal insulating material 52 may be provided between the end members 16, 17 and bearing housing members 20, 21 supported thereby. The rotor may have its own can 48, and the liquid may flow through a shaft passageway 44 to lubricate the bearings 46, 47. |
