PURPOSE: A technique for measuring an on-line surface asperity by an acoustic emission signal is provided to decrease time consumption and labor force through a repetition measurement by directly measuring the surface asperity of a process object on a mechanism by on-line using the acoustic emission signal. CONSTITUTION: An acoustic emission signal is obtained from an acoustic emission sensor(6) attached to a side of a workpiece, and the obtained acoustic emission signal passes through a BNC cable(10), an amplifier(7), and an A/D converter(8) for storing a digital data in a computer(9). An absolute average and standard deviation of the stored data is obtained using a statistic method. A dimensionless coefficient composed as the absolute average and standard deviation is generated. A characteristic of the acoustic emission signal is extracted in grinding and process is performed in a specific condition for generating the dimensionless coefficient, and a correlation with a surface asperity of a grinding and process object is obtained from the dimensionless coefficient.
