The drive of the barrel ratchet (1) of a mechanical watch movement is automatically wound up by an oscillating mass. The mechanism features a wolf's teeth wheel (6) which is moved into position by pawls (4,5). The wolf's teeth wheel (6) is connected to a pinion (7) which operates an intermediate pinion (8) that contacts the barrel ratchet (1). The intermediate pinion (8) moves in a translational manner to disengage it from the barrel ratchet (1) during manual winding by the crown (2). When automatic winding resumes the intermediate pinion (8) is pushed back into contact with the teeth of the ratchet by the pinion (7) and spring (11).
