The syringe consists of a one-piece barrel (1) with an inner cavity of approximately semi-cylindrical cross-section, and a cylindrical tip (7), linked by a conical section (5). It has a plunger with a branched tip to propel the lens, the branches being of a hard but flexible plastic material which allows them to move towards the centre as the lens moves along the barrel of the syringe. In addition, the central branch of the piston can have a spatula tip to hold the lens against the barrel's curved inner surface. The syringe and piston are made from heat resistant materials to permit sterilisation in an autoclave.
