The method involves moving the carriage (70) to a position outside the normal scanning region, and coupling it to a slider connection (100,102) which is connected to a slider structure (90) movable between a number of start positions. The slider structure comprises lenses (84,86) of different optical strengths, each start position positioning a corresponding lens in the optical scanning path. The slider structure is moved to one start position by a drive force delivered by moving the carriage and the slider connection. The carriage is then decoupled from the slider connection. Independent claims are included for a scanning system and a method of varying image resolution.
