The device protects a fuel tank against damage by a vehicle driving under it. It has a main body (14), which at least partially encloses the fuel tank (10), and has self-cleaning structures (16) on its side facing the tank. The structures are formed by dirt-collecting parts (18), e.g. recesses or channels (22), of the protective device, which are connected to a dirt removal part (20). The device has an air intake (34) to direct an air flow over the structures.
