The method involves representing a volume data record with a number of volume data elements (8), whereby each volume data element is associated with a position in space and a volume data value (d). A transparency value (t) is determined for each volume data value using a transfer function (F). A perspective two-dimensional image of the volume data elements with an associated transparency value different one, is determined, outgoing from a focal point (12) in direction of an optic axis (13). The two-dimensional image comprises a number of image elements (14), whereby each image element is associated with a position (x, y, z) in space and an image data value (d'), so that the image elements form an image plane (15) in their entirety. The value of an image element is determined based on image contributions of the volume data values of the volume data elements which lie on a sampling line (16) determined through the focal point and the respective image element. The focal point is adjustable along the optic axis through interactive inputs. Further volume data elements, whose volume data values are associated with a transparency value different one, are considered at the inquiry of the image contribution of a volume data element.
