PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an unsaturated carboxylic acid copolymer degradable without exerting a bad influence on the natural environment and to provide a method for effectively producing the same. SOLUTION: This unsaturated carboxylic acid copolymer having a chemical structure of a carbonyl group introduced into a polymer main chain is obtained by hydrolyzing an unsaturated carboxylic acid copolymer composed of an unsaturated carboxylic acid such as acrylic acid, etc., and vinyl acetate and further oxidizing the hydrolyzate. This method for producing the unsaturated carboxylic acid copolymer in this manner is provided.
