PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new ultraviolet absorbent in which primary particles are ultrafine particle and defects of the ultrafine particles such as problems caused by easiness to coagulate and badness in dispersibility and extensional slippage are overcome, and which is useful for resins and cosmetics and is excellent in transparency, ultraviolet light-absorbing properties and safety. SOLUTION: This ultraviolet absorbent contains a zinc oxide-based solid solution expressed by the formula: (Zn)1-xM3+x-δO (wherein M3+ expresses 3 valent metal such as Al, Fe, Ce, Ti or the like; (x) is a number in the range of 0<x<=0.2; andδexpresses a cation lattice defect), having 0.1-1.5μm average secondary particle size of tubular form and >=20 m2/g BET specific surface area. An ultraviolet resistant resin composition and a sunscreen cosmetic material are obtained by compounding the above ultraviolet absorbent.
