PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem that the accuracy of setting of rolling load by performing the preset of reduction manually by an operator based on the experience until now while taking difference pressure as a guide is poor because a multi roll mill such as a Sendzimir mill which adopts an integrated type monoblock housing which is different from a usual rolling mill having a structure of rolls and chocks in the form of reduction and a screw-down device in which eccentric rings of back-up rolls and eccentric structure of backing bearings are utilized is adopted, so the direct detection of the rolling load with a load cell which is installed between a housing and chocks like the usual rolling mill is impossible. SOLUTION: In this method for setting up rolling load for Sendzimir mills, the rolling load is determined by substituting the values of the kind of steel, original thickness, finished thickness width and diameter of each roll at setup in a rolling load calculating formula which is determined by learning. The rolling load is exerted by a rolling-down cylinder, the eccentricity of each back-up roll at this time is detected with a position dedetector and the rolling load is determined from the eccentricity of each back-up roll by the rolling load calculating formula again determined by learning. When the difference of the rolling load from the last rolling load is not more than a specified value, that rolling load is decided as the preset value before starting rolling.
