Integral bearing assembly for a turbocharger rotor

A combination bearing (10) supporting a shaft (16) interconnecting the turbine and compressor wheels (18) of turbocharger incorporates a rotating journal bearing (20), a squeeze film damper (32) with a registration and retention flange, and a ball bearing assembly. The ball bearing assembly has an outer race (46) providing a thrust shoulder (50) and a registration receiver for the damper flange. Ball roller elements (52) are retained by the outer race (46) and engaged between the thrust shoulder (50) on the outer race (46) and an opposing thrust shoulder on the shaft.
