PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device that simplifies an arithmetic operation used for blind channel estimate for channel impulse response with respect to a DMT signal. SOLUTION: The device of this invention has an arithmetic unit 6 that is adapted to estimate an impulse response by using an auto-correlation function of a received signal. The other device/arithmetic unit uses this auto-correlation function to furthermore simplify the estimate of the impulse response. The device of this invention can determine the impulse responses of both a time unchanging channel and a time changing channel. Each of the devices has a reception unit receiving a DMT signal and a memory storing at least the auto- correlation function. As an example of the devices, there are a DMT MODEM, a DSL MODEM, a digital signal processor or a digital signal processor chip set.
